Looking Back on My Time at Impact Hub Kathmandu & FabLab Nepal

By Amit Hitang

I joined Impact Hub Kathmandu/FabLab Nepal in mid-June 2024 as a Technical Associate. It was my first real step into the professional world. Honestly, I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but I found a warm, welcoming space full of friendly and kind people who made me feel at home from day one.

Over the months I spent there, until I left in April, I had the chance to learn, explore, and grow in ways I hadn’t imagined. The environment encouraged curiosity. Everyone around me was supportive and open to ideas, which made a big difference, especially for someone just starting out. I’m truly thankful for the trust and freedom I was given to learn and contribute.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job was getting hands-on with digital fabrication. Turning an idea in my head into a physical object using tools like 3D printers, laser cutter, and CNC router was something I never got tired of. The best part? I was allowed to work on my own projects during free time, and the people around me were always supportive.

Working on plastic recycling initiatives was a real eye-opener. I got to see the current state of recycling in Nepal up close—the gaps, the challenges, and also the potential. It made me realize how much work still needs to be done, but also how small actions and the right technology can create real impact. One experience that stands out was traveling to Ree village in Dhading, a remote area where we helped set up a Community Recycling Center. It was humbling and fulfilling to be a part of something so impactful, where innovation meets grassroots engagement for the betterment of society.

Another moment I’ll never forget was organizing the ADB Assistive Device Makeathon. Working with others to design assistive tools for people with disabilities was something special. Seeing how even a simple prototype could improve someone’s daily life hit me hard. The realization of how technology can be used to uplift the daily lives of people in need was incredibly moving. It inspired me to continue working in this domain in the future.

Throughout my time at Impact Hub Kathmandu/FabLab Nepal, I met people who inspired me and pushed me to think differently. The culture there wasn’t just about work, it was about collaboration, impact, and community.

Now that I’ve moved on, I carry with me everything I learned and all the memories made. I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of such a space, and I know this chapter will always stay close to my heart.
