Celebrating March, we’re proud to introduce you to one of our brilliant startups: Flowy Ventures, led by our power woman entrepreneur, Dilisha Shrestha. Dilisha is trying to break the period taboo and revolutionize how we manage our feminine hygiene in Nepal! This month, she shares her journey of Flowy with us to celebrate womanhood not just for Woman’s day but throughout the year with safe feminine hygiene choices!

Flowy was founded in 2020 to help people better manage their periods without needing disposable pads, tampons, or cloth pads. It’s a more comfortable, hassle-free solution that is better for our bodies and better for the environment. Flowy, through their products, is trying to revolutionize our way of thinking about female personal hygiene by creating reusable, menstruation, and leak-proof underwear that makes periods waste-free contributing to the reduction of waste and consumption. Flowy is committed to encouraging open, frank conversations about our bodies’ natural changes.

Flowy is high-waist period underwear. Its leak-proof holds up to 30 – 40 ML blood, is made of breathable fabric, is reusable and re-washable and gives the most comfortable period experience to girls and women of all ages and body types. It also protects girls and women from rashes, irritations, UTIs, cancer and reproductive health problems.

Our Value: “Period equity” because everybody deserves dignity. We donate products to people who cannot access menstrual hygiene products. Flowy Period underwear comes with multiple layers of protection, it looks like regular underwear but they’re designed to keep moisture away from your skin as they soak up menstrual blood. It can be easily washed and reused. Our products have been chosen by young girls in school and women with disabilities.

As we are a growing brand in Nepal with a team of young groups of girls who are energetic, diverse and committed to bringing change in the period and sexual reproductive health sector in Nepal.  Flowy is slowly growing as a popular period underwear brand in Nepal.

We deliver more than 800 period underwear all over Nepal in one month.  We are ready to launch new colors, and design period pants that will be suitable for all women groups and can be used in different stages of their life.

Normalizing conversations

On taboo subjects around menstruation and bodily leaks – we use our platforms to advocate for and share knowledge on periods, and sexual reproductive health. Through our genuine commitment to climate action and providing an alternative to disposable pads and tampons, we’re committed to being leaders in sustainable apparel. Sustainability is at the heart of our daily operations.

Our product is not just environmentally friendly but also has many health benefits and is changing the lifestyle of many young girls and women because of its many features. Flowy protects women from rashes, UTIs, cancer and even reproductive health problems. It is a leakproof high-waist menstrual underwear which means women can use them while sleeping, they will not have to face the hassle of changing pads every 4 hours and also wear whatever they want during their period days.

Flowy is also partnering with various donors, governmental bodies, and NGOs to conduct Menstrual Underwear distribution programs where we distribute period underwear to deprived girls and women. We also conduct menstrual health awareness programs where we share information about menstrual health and how to care for your body during period days. We recently conducted a program at Sitaram, school and distributed 100-period underwear which was donated by alumni of the school.

Challenges in the journey

As a young brand with a very new product for menstrual health, we’re still highly invested in creating product awareness in the market about products and even safe female hygiene practices. Potential consumers are still unaware of the product and therefore have doubts if this product will work. Moreover, we’ve also seen that young people are very excited about the product but the ones who have been using sanitary pads and tampons for more than 10 – 15 years are reluctant to change at first go. Overall it’s hard to make people aware of sustainable products and business however in Nepal we got lots of encouraging appreciation. In my experience, I still feel there is no support from the government for young entrepreneurs in Nepal.

What support is needed for sustainable businesses?

As a young brand, we will require the right mentorship so that we can make the best decisions for our company. Further, we also need proper networking so that we can reach out to new people. We also require good support from national and international media and media personalities. The current media should inform people about the adverse environmental and health effects of sanitary pads so that sustainable menstrual products can grow in future. We want to grow in Nepal and beyond the globe. We need support from the local level and international levels so that we can together reach our goal and make our community sustainable.
