If you wouldn’t eat it, why put it on your skin?”

11 September 2019 - Rachana Khatri

At a time when we are surrounded by so many chemicals in so many forms that put our health at risk, such as pollutants that we breathe in every day and the amount of processed food with chemicals that we eat, putting more products with harmful chemicals on our skin only worsens our situation.

While Nepali customers are struggling to replace sensitive chemicals used in products because existing solutions are expensive,  Nuga:, a personal care product company,  and an I-Cube Year 2 Company, provides natural edible grade personal care products at an affordable price for them. Their products are 100% natural and are mindful about consistent quality for customers. They manufacture preservatives-free organic personal care products using traditional newari recipe and discarding use of synthetic chemicals.

It was founded by Rasana and Suyesh Shrestha, a sustainability minded duo, who ensure that the personal care products are tested by food technicians so that they are edible grade. The co-founders envisioned Nuga: as being a means through which they could create employment opportunities for Nepalese youth as well. They have a manufacturing and prototyping space, where 6 people work on production. Nuga: works in both the business to business market, supplying to Tranquility Spa, and the Business to consumer market by selling at local markets and online platforms such as Daraz.

Nuga: has been introducing new, exciting products consistently, and will continue to do so in the future as well. Currently their products include various soaps, lip and body scrubs, lip balms, and body butters all available in a range of delicious flavors.

Rasana Shrestha on WHY NUGA:?

“The economy of Nepal is majorly based on agriculture and remittances. However, the money that is brought in by remittance goes out of the country for importing goods. A huge chunk of this money goes towards Fast-Moving Consumer Goods, products which are very expensive. Besides being expensive, the health risk possessed by using these products, due to their harmful chemical content is immeasurable.

On the other hand, the products from agriculture of Nepal are being wasted as there is either no market or infrastructure for reaching the nearby market. In order to tackle both these problems Nuga: was born. The products of Nuga: are based on all natural ingredients processed and preserved through a blend of traditional and modern techniques to ensure that the products that reach our customers are of optimum quality without compromising the natural properties of each ingredient.”
